"There is a thin line between being a kid and being a thug" - "There is a thin line between being a kid and being a thug" - John Richter, program coordinator for youthful offenders at the Orange County Jail.

Do you know a kid who is headed for trouble?  Or a parent unable to cope?  There are many services in Central Florida aimed at keeping youngsters from crossing that thin line.  And there are programs to help parents struggling with their children.  Here are a few that offer help and welcome donors or volunteers.

Youth development or mentoring:

  • BETA Center, 407-277-1942. Helps pregnant and parenting teens. Offers individual and family counseling, parenting skills classes and day care.

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, 407- 841-6855. Offers after school programs to help kids in need reach their potential. For ages 6 to 18.

  • African-American Male / Female Summit, 407- 839-3295. Presents workshops on responsibility, discipline, respect, healthy lifestyles and academic achievement.

  • Frontline Outreach, 407-293-3000. Offers, day care, GED prep and teenparenting, abstinence and anger management classes for urban youths.

  • Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, 407  689-4403. Introduces scouting to boys at risk for substance abuse and violence.

  • Citrus Council of Girl Scouts, 407-8964475. Introduces scouting to low-income girls in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Brevard and Volusia counties.

  • Central Florida YMCA, 407-896-9220. Sponsors leadership activities, dances, midnight basketball and classes to develop character and prevent dropping out of school.

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Florida, 407-522-9799. Pair, adult role models with children, mostly from single parent families.

  • Central Florida Police Athletic League, 407-291-1996. Sponsors education, recreation and cultural activities for kids ages 6 to 17.

  • ESTEEM, 407-645-1193. Provides after school help for kids ages 3 to 18 with a focus on literacy, cultural activities and volunteering.

  • Metropolitan Orlando Urban League, 407-841-7654. Offers programs to curtail crime and build self-esteem and positive family relations.

Delinquents:

  • Department of Juvenile Justice, 407-521-2600. Volunteer coordinator, Jeremy Wayland.

  • Youthful Offender Program at the Orange County Jail, 407-836-3323. Coordinator, John Richter.

Abused, abandoned or neglected children:

  • Department of Children & Families, 407-245-0400, Ext. 150. Volunteer coordinator, Shirley Barber.

  • Florida Abuse Hotline 1-800-962-2873.

  • Child Abuse Survivors Support Group, 407-695-8222. Support for adults 18 and older who were abused as children.

Substance abuse

  • Adolescent alcohol and substance abuse hotline, in Orange, Seminole, Osceola counties, 407-425-8111.

  • The Center for Drug-Free Living, 407-245-0010. Offers treatment for substance abusers and establishes neighborhood "Village Houses'' that kids can use as safe houses and activity centers around the clock.

  • Grove Counseling Center  407-3271765. Offers prevention and treatment services to people 7 and older in Seminole County.
